EARLY LEARNING GOALS FOR THE FOUNDATION STAGE

1. PERSONAL AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

Our outcomes focus on children learning how to work, play and cooperate with others outside the family. We encourage, through our activities, children to establish relationships with other children and adults. We incorporate social aspects throughout our range of activities and at key times throughout the day such as meal times.

We make children aware of the needs and feelings of others and show respect for people of other cultures and beliefs. We promote a sharing environment and turn taking. We encourage independence in selecting activities and resources. Our nursery expects children to express their feelings in response to their experiences.

2. LANGUAGE AND LITERACY

Our outcomes aim to provide foundation for literacy. Our aims are to develop a child's understanding and use of language. We promote a child's listening skills and competence in the use of language. This provides the basis for children becoming readers and writers. Our activities encourage children in small and large groups to listen attentively and talk about their experiences. As a child progresses to writing we work with small groups on letter  formation and recognition.

3. MATHEMATICS

We aim to provide a foundation for numeracy. This includes shape, size, position and quantities. Through the stimulus provided by the nursery, children will begin to understand and record numbers and begin to show awareness of number operations, such as addition and subtraction, and begin to use the language involved. Basic  addition and subtraction problems are provided for children deemed capable of achieving such aims.

4. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORLD

These outcomes focus on children's developing knowledge and understanding of their environment, other people and the features of the natural and man made world.

We provide children opportunities to talk about where they live, the environment, their families and past and present events in their lives,

We provide activities, which give the children chances to see how things grow and change in nature, and observe and discuss features of man made materials. Skills such as cutting, joining, folding and building are developed.

5. PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT

These outcomes focus on children developing physical control, mobility, and awareness of space and manipulative skills in indoor and outdoor environments.

We provide a range of equipment to develop control and co-ordination and an awareness of space and others.

6. CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT

These outcomes focus on the development of children's imagination and their ability to communicate and to express ideas and feelings in creative ways.

Our wide range of creative activities allows children to explore sound, colour, texture, shape and form in two and three dimensions.
